The press conference organized in Berlin was attended even by Volkswagen boss Martin Winkerton, certainly to demonstrate that the event was really important: it was the German group’s unveiling of the first plug-in version of the Golf, dubbed Golf Twin Drive. “Gas and diesel engines will be around for a long time to come, but the future belongs to zero emission all-electric cars." said Winkerton.
Then, while showing the electric outlet to be used to recharge the car’s batteries, the Volkswagen managing director added: “The Golf Twin Drive is virtually a zero emission car mainly in urban areas and thanks to its combustion engine it has greater range on long distances.”
Fitted with a 2.0 l 122 horsepower turbo diesel engine, the Golf Twin Drive is assisted by a li-ion battery-powered electric motor, which enables the car to reach a 50 km range in the electric mode. That is also possible thanks to a further aid from the regenerative braking system and the Start&Stop technology. The Wolfsburgh automaker is working on the plug-in hybrid project in cooperation with other eight partners and their target is to launch a demonstration fleet made up of 20 vehicles by 2010.
